Mastering the Art of CTAs: A Guide to Boosting Engagement
August 6, 2024

When you’re marketing your business, the goal is simple — be seen by the right potential customers and convince them to engage. The magic ingredient? A powerful call to action (CTA). Let’s dive into the best practices for creating irresistible CTAs that get clicks!

What’s a CTA and Why Do They Matter?

A CTA is a prompt that encourages viewers to take a specific action. Online, these often appear as clickable buttons leading to a place where users can complete that next step. Think “Buy Now” or “Learn More.”

CTAs are crucial in guiding your audience through the customer journey. Without them, even interested viewers might not know what to do next. Effective CTAs ensure they take that important step forward — the one you want them to take.

CTAs can be used in social media posts, email campaigns, on your landing page or website, and other places (see a list of Craeve’s services that might be applicable!).

Best Practices for Killer CTA Buttons

  • Use strong, exciting verbs like “Join,” “Apply,” “Start,” or “Create.” Try to switch up your CTAs’ language so you don’t always rely on a bland phrase like “Read More.” You always want to try to tap into emotions if you can.
  • Make your CTA button stand out with contrasting colors. If your page is primarily light, go for a dark CTA button. Also, give your CTA some breathing room. Surround it with enough blank space to really draw the reader’s eye to it.
  • Sometimes, using first-person language can make your CTA more persuasive. For example, “I’m ready to start” can be more compelling than “Start now.”
  • Place your CTA where it’s immediately visible without users needing to scroll. This increases the chances of it getting noticed and clicked. It doesn’t hurt to put a CTA button near the top of the page, but maybe add a contextual link or a banner near the bottom to allow readers to click on the CTA in multiple locations.
  • Finally, align your CTAs with your marketing objectives. Is it an awareness campaign, a sale, or a special event? Make sure you are guiding your customers to the action you want them to take.
